From the introduction...

"During the last year, over three hundred print shops in forty states were identified for profile in this directory.
There is no attempt made to qualify or judge the shops listed. The workshops in this volume meet the following criteria:

  • the workshop has a creative component;
  • the workshop ios oriented, at least in part, towards limited editions;
  • the workshop uses "hand-pulled" printing techniques;
  • the workshop allows access by artists and/or printmakers other than the owner, or allows access outside a normal class structure. (College and university print departments are included if they allow non-student access.)

The search to identify print shops benefited from mailing lists and previous compilations as well as networking among the shops. Material in this directory has come from written responses to questionnaires, fax transmissions, telephone interviews and shop publications."
